Cruise Tripping from Homer to Seldovia

Take Rainbow Tours ship, the Sizzler to historic Seldovia, located across the Kachemak Bay from Homer, closer to the mouth of the bay. Check in at the Rainbow Tours office on Cannery Row Boardwalk half an hour before departure. The ship leaves at 11:00 am. The price is moderate.

Skipper Lee has developed quite a reputation among bird watches and wildlife spotters. The two-hour trip from Homer to Seldovia via the scenic route through Eldred Passage behind Yukon Island, with Sadie Peak rising majestically on the mainland, passes by Sadie Cove, Tutka Bay, and the shores of Kachemak Bay State Marine Park.

On one trip, some 30 species of birds were spotted, as well as an orca whale, a minke whale, two sea otters and a bald eagle. While you can’t expect such sensational sightings every day, Skipper Lee, who narrates the trip, seems to have an uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time to see wildlife.

One-and-a-half hours of free time is scheduled in Seldovia for sightseeing. Seldovia is a small fishing village with the motto, “city of secluded charm.” Once a thriving principal seaport, Seldovia retains most of the appearance of times gone by, in a seaside setting ringed by mountains. A short saunter in any direction from town will bring you to fine fishing, photographing and hiking spots. Pack a picnic lunch for Seldovia or stop by the Centurion Restaurant, facing the boat harbor, moderate to expensive. The Kachemak Kafe on Main Street is inexpensive for a quick bite to eat. If you like to fish, bring your rod. The fishing is excellent from all the beaches for Dolly Varden and humpies. Fish off the breakwater (with heavy tackle!) for halibut.

If fishing isn’t your sport, how about hiking the short trail from inside Beach to Outside Beach? It’s a good place for beachcombing and bird watching. Or try the foot trail around Susan Lake. Just ask a local person, he or she will point you in the right direction.

Seldovia is also justly famous for its profuse berries. Just head off and go pick ’em!

The boat returns to Homer at 4:00 pm. Your evening is free.

As part of their passenger service, Rainbow Tours will arrange an overnight stay at one of several bed and breakfasts or small hotels in Seldovia. Annie McKenzie’s Boardwalk Hotel (243 Main Street, Seldovia AK 99663, (907) 234-7816, deluxe price range) and the Seldovia Rowing Club are especially picturesque. If you stay overnight, the Sizzler leaves for Homer at 7:00 am and again at 2:30 pm.
